EssaySnark's Strategies for the 2021-'22 MBA Application for the Stanford Graduate School of Business
The update for the 2021 Stanford SnarkStrategies Guide was an opportunity for us to further streamline and focus, while also expanding the advice on how to handle very specific nuances of the Stanford application. Not only do you get a comprehensive discussion of “what matters most” and “why Stanford” but you also learn about when and what types of stories to potentially consider for the Optional Essay A and B questions. You actually get a lot of space to present yourself in the Stanford MBA application. This Guide helps you to make meaningful decisions and figure out how to use that space wisefly.
Every year, we learn from the successes we see make it in, and we apply that into our guides to be even more detailed and thorough in offering explanations of what works in an application to a top school like the GSB. We learn more and more each and every year, based on working with yet another crop of Brave Supplicants who are successful in their apps to Stanford. We are able to share what we learn with you in this updated GSB app guide for 2021.
This year’s version will support you through an intensive process of introspection, as is needed for essays on “what matters most and why”. This Class of 2024 edition offers about 100 pages of core content and actionable advice on how to think about, and construct, your Stanford essays.
Stanford is looking for similar qualities, year in and year out, and they don’t need to revamp their essays all the time in order to find the best candidates. They’re in the “if it works, don’t fix it” camp. The consistency of the Stanford application shows that their essays – “What matters most, and why?” and “Why Stanford?” – are reliably delivering information about candidates that the adcom values in their assessment processes. We include commentary on coronavirus and how the changing world may also be changing things at Stanford, so you can take advantage of the most timely and actionable advice possible to make your application stand out.
This guide will show you:
- How to identify the information that the adcom will value
- An ideal structure for the two required essays
- How much career goals matter (if at all)
- How to show the adcom who you really are

Snark's School Guide series are generally full of solid information and Stanford is no different. The majority of the good stuff is at the second half where Snark talk about the essays. This is the thing, Stanford's essays are awesome, they truly help you to reflect on your life, even if you don't get in (chances are high), you still learn a lot if you devote your time write their essays. The other thing is that this guide can help you to find out if you are someone who has a legitimate shot at Stanford by comparing what you've done vs. what they ask for. On a last note I felt Snark's school series give your more bang for your buck than the admission requirements series.
This "guide" is filled with
1. empty advices such as "be yourself" "be honest"
2. statistics about stanford admission and class profile that you can find online
[this review was originally posted on amazon]Response from EssaySnark: HE WAS RIGHT! (well maybe not completely but...) After getting a few such comments, we took a hard look at the approach we were using for Stanford especially, and for the 2013-14 version of this guide we did a gut renovation -- and every season since we've further tightened, clarified, and improved to cut the chaff, and also added even more exercises to help guide you on the process of self-reflection that's required. We do still stand by the advice to be yourself and be honest though! :-)And we always include statistics on class profiles and trending GMAT averages in each of our guides, since it's helpful to have that info in one place (the schools all seem to try and hide it in different spots on their websites, and they rarely preserve historical data so you're not able to appreciate trends). Stephen P made very fair points at the time and we took them to heart and, we think, addressed such complaints. We hope you'll check out our new-season version - and that you'll take the time to give us feedback on anything you think is wanting or sucky! We're always trying to get better and provide products that are truly useful to your process.
Now, you might be thinking that all the "Essay Guides" are same, what is so special about this one. To put it in right perspective, this is not an essay guide with a bunch of examples of successful and unsuccessful essays. In fact there is not a single sample essay in this whole 40 page book. This is a Strategy guide and I shouldn't use the word "book" because this is a field manual written by a veteran. To put in author's own word this field manual is there to help you on "what not to write".
@ES: Loving the first exercise from your Stanford guide. Will be working on that for a few days! ?
