For those of you considering applying to UCLA Anderson, we’ve got some ideas for the main essay that they are asking you to write about, which is this:
How have recent events influenced the impact you would like to make in your community, career, or both? (250 words maximum)
We welcome reflection on any events that influenced you in your personal or professional lives, or in society in general, and look forward to learning about specific ways you want to leave your mark. [emphasis in original]
This is a surprisingly tricky question, with a lot packed into it, and dang, only 250 words?!?
We’re naming this post as a “life experience essay” based on our post categories (see the ‘snarchive of other “life experience essays” here) yet it also could sorta be a “career goals essay” right? Based on how they’re asking you to talk about what you want to do in the career?
If we distill the question down, it’s really asking you about your values.

A totally challenging exercise!
There is more about this question on our MBA Essay Questions page for UCLA Anderson, and also in the 2020 version of the MBA Application Guide to UCLA — which we apologize, did not get updated for this season, mostly because the question is indeed the same (which means that last season’s guide still has plenty of good help for you in it).
Our Single Shot Express Essay Decimator is a good option for those struggling with whether the draft constructed for the UCLA prompt is actually a fit to what they are asking.
