Sometimes the adcom is super clear and very direct in the advice they give — such as Yale SOM’s reassurance about use (or not!) of the optional essay in your MBA application.
It’s really common, though, for Brave Supplicants to feel confused based on instructions from the admissions teams. Sometimes this is because this process invites second-guessing and doubt. Sometimes it’s because the darned instructions aren’t very clear!
Take MIT Sloan, for instance. They are notorious (at least around here) for having contradictory statements in their applications and saying different things to applicants in different contexts about how the application should be approached. Gah! Frustrating!! We spent a whole season or two complaining here about some of the requirements from MIT.
