While it was an emotional challenge to work through the Essay Decimator, it was actually harder for me to accept that there was no picture of “what good looks like” to work from.
Yet, it was worth it. My essays were authentic, and I had sweat equity ownership of my own writing.

It’s so true! The process is never easy (at least, not for the first set of essays) yet we often hear people say that when they go to submit, they feel good about it because no matter how it turns out, they really communicated something important in the app.

The fact that essays are not evaluated in a vacuum limits the usefulness of looking at other applicants’ successful essays. Just because the transgendered paraplegic minority ex-Navy Seal non-profit startup founder got into Harvard and Stanford with a crayon drawing of his rescue beagle doesn’t mean you will.
