Here’s the deal: Standardized tests support the meritocracy. They are biased. It’s true for all of them, the college entrance exams up through the GMAT and GRE for grad school.
Last year saw the combination of the pandemic which closed down testing centers, and the long-overdue awareness in this country of racism that came about from the filming of George Floyd’s murder.
These two events — mostly the first one — caused some schools to re-examine their reliance on test scores in admissions.
These two events — mostly the second one — caused some large corporations to re-examine their policies that uphold systemic racism.
Why do we still have the GMAT or GRE required for ANY admissions is baffling, but this re-examination has apparently not yet happened at a critical mass of schools and companies.
In this changing environment, how much do you need to be worried about how high your GMAT or GRE score is?
