An astute Brave Supplicant observed in remarks to us about their process of applying and where they’d been accepted so far over the course of this season that maybe Round 1 was actually more competitive this year than Round 2?
That’s actually how it shaped up last year, in the coronavirus season! We didn’t expect that to reoccur this year but some signs are that maybe the pattern repeated, at least in some ways, for certain segments of the applicant pool.

It’s a very common experience to want to figure out what happened or find reasons behind the outcomes that you personally have experienced. The brain needs to make sense of our experience!! A lot of your are analytically-inclined anyway, so your brains will naturally want to wrestle around with what you know of the data and do comparisons with what others share about their experiences and outcomes. It can also make you crazy to do too much of this! So, let your brain indulge in some of this what-if and wonderings, but then see if you can go do something in the healthy/productive category to distract yourself. Go for a walk, or just sit on a bench in the sunshine, or play fetch with your cat or whatever your cat will indulge you with.
Or this dude may prove a useful distraction for a moment or two:
