This seriously happy note came in from a BSer in May last year and we figured it was appropriate to post it now, since so many of you are getting antsy waiting for admit decisions — here’s something that hopefully you can be looking forward to (or at least some variation of it) in the weeks to come!
Essay Snark!!!!! The last few days were quite a ride! After welcome weekend at ExcellentSchool, I was pretty certain that I was headed to there instead of GoodSchool even though ExcellentSchool offered me $20k total compared to GoodSchool’s $40k offer. Then on Wednesday, Ms. Adcom At AwesomeSchool called to admit me off the AwesomeSchool waitlist. Just when I thought I was headed to ExcellentSchool, I now had two and a half days to make a tough decision. I scrambled to talk with as many students at ExcellentSchool as I could and got a good feel for the school and the resources available for sustainability and energy. After all of my research I still felt so torn between the two schools. I loved the feel of ExcellentSchool and all of the students I met, and AwesomeSchool was going to be about $40k more expensive with the higher cost of living and difference in tuition. Yet AwesomeSchool offered so many resources for sustainability and clean energy that aligned with my personal and professional goals.
Throughout the decision process, I kept coming back to the financial issue, so I figured I might as well ask if AwesomeSchool could provide any financial assistance even though I’d heard that they were a bit more conservative with funding. I sent Ms. Adcom At Awesome School an e-mail on Thursday discussing why I loved Awesome School and what I thought I could contribute to the class and closed with the ask for aid. Ms. Adcom At Awesome School called me the next day (decision day for ExcellentSchool) and offered me a $60k Fellowship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was speechless and definitely shed a few tears. I’ll be headed there in the fall, and I couldn’t be more excited. It feels so good! My family and friends are stoked and the last 24-hours have been amazing. I’m looking forward to what b-school will bring because I know it will be tougher than applying to business school 🙂
Now before you get too excited… Please heed our advice about hitting up admissions for (more) money after an admit!! Be smart. Tread carefully. Don’t lose sight of the big picture and please remember your manners.
We also have to mention: This BSer had a great profile by way of differentiation but some weaknesses in test scores too. They had tried applying in a prior season and got waitlisted a few places but not admitted. (Those apps that year had been Round 2; they might have made out differently if they’d done it in Round 1 then.) These apps last year were also Round 2 for them and as you can see, it was a bumpy ride before it all smoothed out into this happily-ever-after.
Moral of the story? 1) If you don’t give up, you WILL make it in. 2) If you are polite and play your cards right (pay carefully attention to how they say they approached it) then it sometimes can work to get a bump-up in a financial aid package (and again remember what we said about this person’s diversity profile which definitely helped). 3) There’s hope if you’re waitlisted!!
If any of you have Success Stories to share, we love posting ’em. Drop us a note in the comment box in your School Targets section of My SnarkCenter if you want to write something for us to post here for all BSers to benefit from!
