We got a question from a military MBA candidate recently and what they were asking is not at all unusual. We asked for permission to post it here on the blahg because we figured that others may be interested to hear what we had to say. Here’s what they said: Happy Thanksgiving! I talked with…

Wow. You guys rock. Thank you for the reply. I am excited that you used my question for the blog. I was exposed to GE’s JOLP (Junior officer leadership program) while I was at school. I shadowed a few guys in the program and it was really a great experience. I got to meet with some very high-up people who were not shy when they said they sponsor the program in order to eventually get us to work for GE one day. It was there where I was first decided on possibly pursuing an MBA. Most of the guys in the program were simultaneously in a part time MBA program because it was almost required in order to move up. I have the money saved from two trips to Afghanistan plus GI benefits so I figured I would be better off doing a full-time program. As soon as I sit for the GMAT I will be hitting you guys up for a comprehensive profile review. Again, you guys rock!

Great to hear the comments about the GE program – sounds like you’re doing your homework!! Yes, those LDPs are definitely meant as feeders into management – and lots of companies are now seeing the value of the transitioning military officer as positive additions to their workforce. Interesting to hear the feedback that the MBA is still necessary, though it makes sense now that you say it. Indeed, a full-time MBA is an excellent choice for anyone who can swing it; doing school + work simultaneously is not an easy path! Though it doesn’t suck to have an income coming in while you’re a student.
You’ve probably seen it already but we had a follow-on post on military MBA candidates today. 🙂
Thanks for the question! We look forward to going along for the ride with you as you embark on this next big adventure.

Great article!
But I think you underestimate how bureaucratic the military is. No Military officer should be shocked about meetings or e-mail.

@mhirama, thanks for stopping by! We certainly aren’t experts in the military so we apologize if you feel we’ve mischaracterized your experience there! Didn’t mean to imply that someone transitioning from the service would be clueless about such things. 🙂
