I really enjoyed writing this essay – it came in most handy during the interviews! For most applicants, I think the challenge could potentially come from the generally positive feedback BSers get when they ask around. However, it is important to put the feedback into perspective: it is relative to current position/responsibility.

Therefore, it was very useful to ask about developmental blind spots for progression within the organization. What are some the the things I can do today to convert my leadership “potential” into “performance”?

LOL – We don’t often hear “enjoy” and “essay” in the same sentence!!!! But yeah, certain questions definitely open up different opportunities. Curious about your comment though. Are you suggesting that BSers hit up their managers proactively for feedback? ‘Cuz if so, then we have to say, that’s kinda brilliant, and not something that had even occurred to us!!!!!

I cannot speak for others, but I make an effort to ask. It is smart career planning after all. And it is not just my current manager. Mentors, former managers, my manager’s manager, colleagues who have been around… they are all treasure troves of information.

I have been fortunate to learn early on in my career that bigger jobs do not just happen by accident. I would much rather be always aware of what skills I need to build, always aware of what behavioral competencies I need to cultivate, than find out during promotion period why I did not get my next job!
