EssaySnark turns into PessimisticSnark right around this time of year. It’s just based on what we’ve seen, admissions season after admissions season. We started covering the doom-and-gloom warnings re: Round 3 back in early January.
By contrast, just a few months ago we were Rah-Rah-Snark.
Case in point: This EssaySnark tumblr. Where we talked about going to Plan B if things didn’t work out in Round 1. See, optimism!
But just like a good joke, the success of a bschool app largely depends on timing. We’re in February. Things have changed. And our tone does try to reflect that. You know, reality and all.
For example, around this time of year, we typically serve up some direct advice along those lines, to specifically not bother with Columbia if you’re headed to the party now.
To be even more direct, now that we’re at the tail end of the season, we have to throw up this sign.
It’s not that we don’t believe in you, Brave Supplicant. It’s just that these things need to be thought through carefully. It’s really frustrating when your buddies are all getting their interview invites, and others who applied in Round 1 are acting all smug and taking mental vacations (or literal ones) because they have already been accepted. We know, you’re itching to join them – you want to go do this thing! Bschool sounds like a fabulous two-year party and you can’t wait to get started!
The thing is, apps right now are just not likely to succeed. 🙁
(We also have to remind you that any MBA admissions consultant who tells you differently is immediately suspect – this is the downtime for admissions consulting – are you sure that they have your best interests in mind? Or are they looking to make a sale when times are slow?)
Keep plugging away at making your profile stronger, and keep reading this here blahg to help you get your plans in place for next season. It’ll be here before you know it. And you watch. We’ll turn into CheerleadingSnark again very soon.
If you want our honest opinion on your exact chances and not just some blanket statement that “no it won’t work” you can go for our Late Season Targets Review for a personalized take on your situation. Sometimes Round 3 is indeed viable.
