We know we’ve been displaying some ruffled feathers of late, with all our high-and-mighty talk about how some BSers are too high-and-mighty for us. We just get a little miffed at times about the attitudes we see.
Sorry that we’re not moving on from that theme, but we’ve got another one to b!tch about today. This is also along the lines of the habits we sometimes see BSers indulging in with app strategy and essay development and trying to game the system. This other behavior usually hits us right at the beginning of working with a BSer – and we have to say, it’s pretty unimpressive.
This is the person who feels that only a Harvard or Stanford MBA is “worth it”.
We understand where this comes from, but that just reeks of elitism to us. We get it; H and S are unrivaled; but really???
What you’re actually saying with this claim is that you are too good for any other school.
Sorry but it turns our stomach.
You’re also saying that you don’t care diddly squat for the education – that all you want is the doors that will open and the $$$$$$ that will accrue. You care about the label.
We know we shouldn’t be so judgmental about it. After all, more often than not, the kids who toss this out to us at the beginning of the season are often the ones that Harvard and Stanford turn away a few months later. Shocked, they are, when that happens, most typically. These are always the guys (yes it’s almost always the guys) that really do have an impressive career behind them, and a rosy future ahead, regardless of whether it’s adorned with the initials of “M-B-A” or not. They’re surprised at such a turn of events of not getting in, but they also have many options available in pursuing career success without the Harvard or Stanford adornment.
And sometimes, these BSers realize the fallacy of their prior position, and suddenly they’re interested in attending a school like Chicago Booth. (Or if they came into it claiming that “only an MBA from an M7 school is worth it” then now they’re talking about Darden or Duke.)
So that’s fine. Humility sometimes evolves in a person only after getting schooled by Life a bit. (We should know!! Speaking from some firsthand experience on “getting schooled…”)
If you ever hear yourself saying, “It’s only XYZ for me” then just be prepared for how you’ll deal with the situation of ex-XYZ arising. We’ll never hold it against a BSer if they end up changing such a tune. Experience can change opinions. We respect that.
