We recently reconnected with a long-ago Brave Supplicant — when we say “long ago” we mean “LONG ago.” The first contact we had with this person was back in 2010. Yes, it took this BSer two cycles to get admitted to bschool – but get admitted to bschool they did! They’re now finishing up their first year at the GREAT school they made it into the second time around, and from the sound of things, bschool has been pretty darn exciting. We got permission to share the news about what’s going on in the life of this current MBA student.
The year has had its highs and lows, but we’re finally moving away from the intense core curriculum and it’s getting warmer, so I’m hoping there will be more highs. My analytical/technical skills have improved over the past few months ( I know now what a DCF is and can make small talk about tax shields and optimal capital structures at cocktail parties though I’m sure people would rather talk about something else) and I’ve learned a lot about my teamwork and leadership styles (people actually respect the fact that I’m a tell it like it is kind of person because my honesty and eq makes me a good arbiter). I spent my spring break in [Exotic Locale] and it was simply an amazing two-weeks. For the summer I’m going to be at [Fortune 50 company] in [Big City] doing brand management.
I have recently, however, been rethinking my decision to stay in marketing post MBA. Strangely I’ve found myself interested in finance, and especially finance in regard to M&A transactions. I’m afraid that I made a b-line to brand management because I knew I’d be good at it, and not because it’s where I’d be happiest. I’m never one to give myself an easy way out, so I’m taking an M&A structuring elective and am working on an M&A transaction for our first year project. Who knows, though — I might have a great experience at [Fortune 50 company] that lets me know marketing/brand management is where I’m meant to be, so I hope to return 2nd year having had a grand epiphany. That’s a rather tall order for a summer internship, lol.
And remember: It took this person two times to get in! They didn’t make it the first time. If that’s where you’re at, and you’ve been feeling dejected, please see Exhibit 1, above, and know that there’s light at the end of the tunnel for you.
To the 1st year who gave us the update – you continue to impress us!! The attitude is great. Can’t wait to hear what next big challenge you’re tackling!!! Thanks for staying in touch and have an awesome summer in [Big City] !!
