how to prep for an interview (part 1)

October 19, 2011 by EssaySnark 4 Comments

We’re being lazy today. We’re still recovering from the craziness that is Round 1 deadlines. Instead of writing out a big long blahg post for y’all, we’re just gonna point you here.

If you think your bschool interview isn’t as important as speaking to a crowd of 6,000… think again. (It’s at least that important, for one very important person: you.)

So who the heck is EssaySnark, anyway?!

We're the snarky experts in MBA admissions!

Sometimes amused and often appalled by what candidates write in their MBA applications to top bschools, EssaySnark created this little blahg to share common mistakes. Learn from them and avoid making admissions directors laugh (or want to hurl) when they read your essays. If you are hoping to have your essay reviewed anonymously on the blahg for free, submit it for consideration.

Essay Snark I just stumbled across your posts while surfing and trying to find something to read. I submitted applications to 3 schools in round 1 and honestly now the wait is killing me. I am always looking for something to read on mba schools. I must admit your “blagh” is very entertaining. I was wondering if you have ever taken this humorous element and put in any of the essays for your clients. It would be interesting to read funny essays (only if they can get the point across obviously).

On another note, do you have any suggestions for people like me who are going crazy while waiting. I think I have read blogs on Harvard's Stanford's and Haas's website almost 100 times hoping i'll get some new information that I might have missed in my last reading. Crazy Huh ?
Couple of times I've thought of starting preparing for an interview but then I feel what if I don't even get one ? Honestly I feel waiting is harder than writing those essays. When I was working on the applications I had not time to think about anything else. And now that I have no more essays to write I can't stop thinking about “What if I don't get in :(“.

    -A

PS: I wish I had found you before I applied.

Uh, Anonymous, we don't write essays for clients. Like, ever. (Or, never, or whatever word will indicate that that is an impossible statement.) Maybe we misunderstood what you meant?

We've also rarely seen BSers effectively pull off humor in essays, though certainly it would be great if they can.

Yes, the waiting can be tough – we deal with more emotions from clients at this stage than perhaps any other (well, no, it's even worse after the interview but before the decision….). The best advice we can offer you specifically, actually, is to start in on your Round 2 essays… b/c you do realize that you've picked the three hardest schools in the whole wide world to apply to? 😉 As you said, you had no time to stress about things when you were stressing about your essays. That's a more productive stress, probably. Your apps are surely fabulous but it's a little imprudent to assume that you'll make it into one of the three most selective schools that there is. We hope you do!! Not trying to be a jerk, just being realistic.

Of course, those interview invites can come any time. Doesn't hurt to start prepping now but we typically recommend waiting till the interview is scheduled. It's only another week before HBS starts sending those out!! (You think you're worried now…??!)

Off course I didn't mean that you wrote the essays!! I was just wondering if you had ever come across someone you had done that.

Btw, thanks for all the information that you have put up on your blog. Its very helpful. I wish schools did a better job of organizing information for applicants.

I know I've picked up the hardest schools. I trust me I am going crazy. I have almost no nails left to bite ;)!!
I've been thinking about applying to some schools in Round 2 too. Just need to do some research now !!!

OK great – just had to be super clear on the we-don't-write-essays thing – would hate for anyone to misunderstand that!

Glad the blog is proving useful! Agreed that schools could do a better job, though some are trying – NYU Stern has an excellent website, as one example.

Good luck with the research and let us know if we can help with questions on R2 apps!!
