It’s Monday morning. Mid-November. Do you know where your essays are?*
EssaySnark offered a similar scare-you-to-death reality check in July. When Round 1 applicants should’ve been well on their way with their essays. We’re past that mark for Round 2. Do you know where your essays are?
Don’t be fooled into thinking, “Well, I have all the holidays ahead of me! I’m going to work on them over Thanksgiving.” Because who wants to work on essays right now? You have plenty of time. And besides, your buddy invited you out for a beer, and you met this girl… or you’re just so tired after working all day, and boy it’s hard to get motivated…. feeling a little lazy tonight… maybe I’ll just order a pizza and go to bed.
Right. The holidays. “Plenty of time.”
You think that plan will work? Because you know, over Thanksgiving, there’s football and parades and lots of food and oh yeah Black Friday. Shopping. And nobody, we promise you, nobody else in your family is going to be working on essays (and oftentimes it’s amazing how much they don’t want you to be working on them either). It’s very hard to break out of that let’s-have-another-piece-of-pie vibe and put forth the determination and drive to get through a few drafts. At least, it is for EssaySnark, and it seems to be for most of our clients over the years who often claim that they’ll make so much progress over the long four-day weekend and then lo and behold, it’s another post-holiday Monday and there are no essays waiting for EssaySnark to snark upon.
And so that soon turns into, “Well, I have a full week off at Christmastime. I’m going to blast through my essays then!” Because you know what happens between the egg nog and the mistletoe? Time. Slips. By. Roll back and replay the above. The holidays are hectic. There’s a lot going on. You think you’ll have time for essays then?
Listen closely, Brave Supplicant: Now is the time. Now is the BEST time. Essays are awaitin’ to be written and you will be thankful (oh good another thing to be grateful for at Thanksgiving!) to push past the obstacles and get it done NOW. To not do so is to indulge in the luxury of illusion of time in a way that you will quite possibly regret!!!
Essay writing is a creative process. It cannot be rushed — at least, not if you want to generate quality essays at the end. Give yourself the chance to develop the best product possible. Don’t be a glutton of time. Your New Year’s will be all the more celebratory if your applications have already been submitted then!
*EssaySnark doesn’t even know who half those people in the YouTube are. And most of you reading this blog probably never heard of this scare-tactic PSA about where the kids are. We think it was in the ’80s — were you even born yet??
