We talked before about how clear goals and a history of success can show the adcom that bschool is right for you — that you’re thinking smart about your future and are ready to go back to school to take the next step. That you’re “ready” for it in terms of your career progression.
The other often overlooked angle of “readiness” is, are you an effing adult?!?!?
EssaySnark is shocked? appalled? amused? disgusted? with the numbers of people who are UNWILLING TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES and still somehow assume that they’re qualified for a top MBA program.
There are SO MANY people posting anonymously on Internet forums asking for someone else to tell them what to do. The worst are the questions asking how to answer a particular essay question.
THOSE QUESTIONS ARE WRITTEN IN ENGLISH. YOU OBVIOUSLY SPEAK ENGLISH. READ THE QUESTION AND ANSWER IT.
Also totally blood-pressure-raising are those who want to be told how to improve their leadership skills.
THAT IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS QUESTION ESSAYSNARK HAS EVER HEARD.
Let’s break that one down, shall we?
“Tell me what to do to show the adcom that I’m a leader.”
Uh, well… go lead something!
Now that the obvious is out of the way:
WOULDN’T A LEADER BE ABLE TO FIGURE THIS OUT FOR HIMSELF??
Sorry, but EssaySnark is appalled. These people think they’re bschool material??
Okay fine, maybe you’re just young, or maybe you don’t know how to tackle the overwhelming process of writing those stupid essays. But the top schools are looking for MATURITY. They’re looking for EXPERIENCE — which doesn’t have to come with chronological years. They’re looking for people who are SELF DIRECTED, who will TAKE CONTROL OF THEIR LIVES.
No, the adcom is unlikely to ever know that you posted a question like this on an Internet forum. But you have to ask yourself: If you can’t even figure out what the questions are asking… Or what a g*damn leader is… What right do you have to be pitching yourself to these schools????
(Yes, we’re ranting. Needed to blow off some steam here. Hope you’ll excuse us.)
EssaySnark says, roll up your sleeves and dive in. PARTICIPATE in your life. SEEK OUT OPPORTUNITIES to make an impact. In a boring, dead-end job now? CHANGE IT! Either change it from within by finding ways to contribute outside your role, or GET A NEW JOB! Find a charity or worthy cause to get involved with in the community, and see how you can help them. DO SOMETHING with your life! Then you will naturally have plenty of material to use in your bschool essays.
And please, QUIT ASKING TO BE SPOONFED!
Bschool is HARD. Are you going to be posting to Internet forums all the way through, asking for someone to tell you what to write in your reports and papers and presentations? IF YOU CAN’T GET INTO BSCHOOL WITHOUT SIGNIFICANT HELP ON THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF WHAT TO SAY IN AN ESSAY, THEN YOU WILL NOT SUCCEED IN BSCHOOL.
If you are asking people to tell you what to write, if you are asking what leadership is, you are not ready. Take the time to do more research. Figure out what bschool is, and do some digging on yourself. Figure out who YOU are, and what you want, and why you want this. And then come back to us. WHEN YOU’RE READY.
There. We’re done. We think. Hope we didn’t get anything on you there, we were sputterin’ a bit. ‘Scuse, please.
