A BSer came to us about a month before Rd 2 deadlines last year and our interactions started with this question:
I am looking for your help for my application to EWMBA program of HAAS. Got referred by one of my friends who was admitted this year. Need help for the 3 essays and resume
c> Defining Principles
Would like to know , if the individual app accelerators are good for me or not. I already have a draft version and want reviews and feedback so that I can create the final version. Please advise.
We responded by encouraging them to go for the complete solution: The Complete Essay Package. You can read up that end-to-end essay development package here. It includes the core App Accelerators for essay development: Career Goals, Accomplishments & Achievements, and Essay Ideas. We also told them that if they already had drafts ready, they could just sign up for the Essay Decimator instead. These services cover the essays (hence their names) so help on the resume can be gotten through the Reworking Your Resume App Accelerator.
So what happened next?
This BSer purchased the essay reviews only.
OK fine, we have no problem with that. We’re happy to review drafts that are self-developed.
But typically they kinda suck.
And unfortunately these drafts really sucked.
This post is therefore a warning: While we certainly allow and support the a la carte approach to admissions consulting, where you can pick and choose which services to buy – it’s how our entire business is structured – it’s almost always recommended to start with the core of your strategy, get that vetted, and make sure you’re on track before proceeding – yes, even if you already have drafts developed. The Career Goals App Accelerator in particular is very important. Almost everyone needs to significantly improve their career goals, and for those whose goals are acceptable, they still can make them better by going through this step.
When we reviewed this BSer’s essays, over and over we stated that the pitch was not strong enough, and over and over we told them that the Career Goals App Accelerator would be the way to go.
If they had started with that important step, not only would they have saved lots of time, but also they would’ve avoided much frustration, both ours and theirs. And it would’ve been cheaper (the Complete Essay Package is discounted from buying the pieces individually).
If you know what’s required in a bschool essay and you know a lot about the school you’re applying to and you’ve spent many cycles on writing and rewriting your drafts, then you’re a great candidate for the standalone Essay Decimator service. If you’re simply a cheapskate and don’t want to buy something “extra” that you don’t see the need for, we have little hope for you. Do you want to get into bschool or not?
The critique you get back from an Essay Decimator service will tell you if your goals suck.
The tutorial you receive as part of the App Accelerators will teach you how to fix them.
Doesn’t it make sense to start with the tutorial first?
(We haven’t gotten an update recently, but last we heard, the BSer in this story didn’t make it in.)
